Creativity led by Autumn Vickery

In this creativity class students will create multiple stepped crafts. These crafts will become learned skills which can be reproduced independently. We will use our time beginning with a short warm up of our minds, followed by a step by step instruction of the craft. Students will then socially create their craft with intentional conversations. We will build relationships and build our character by supporting and encouraging each other.

Book Club-Hobbit/Anne of Green Gables led by Erica Wilson and Larissa Chavez

Welcoming all readers and bookworms! This semester we will dive into and explore J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and L.M. Montgomery’s  Anne of Green Gables together! As two former teachers, we hope to cultivate a love of reading in your children- and yes, audiobooks are a perfectly acceptable and satisfactory way to read during the week for those auditory learners!

During our class, students will work together to discuss the chapters they have read at home during the previous week and they will learn how to engage with the text, practice critical thinking and expressing their opinions and view in class with each other. We will analyze plot, themes and other literary devices through discussion and hands-on projects about the books during class. These elements make book clubs a valuable tool for fostering a love for reading and critical thinking among middle school students. At the end of each novel, outside of class, we will host a “watch party” (parents welcome!) with snacks and watch the film adaptations of each book! Note: There is no homework outside of class apart from reading/listening to the assigned novel section. (A schedule for the assigned chapters will be provided the first day of class and we will begin the novel together that day.)

We hope your middle schooler is as excited about taking this class as we are about teaching it! Studies have shown that book clubs, and particularly discussions with their peers about books, will boost a student’s confidence in reading and writing, improve their literacy skills and promote empathy through discussion about diverse characters.

Supplies to bring: A copy of each book (even if they are listening during the week)!  Pack of sticky notes and something to write with

Book Club-The Battle: Sequel to The Giant Killer led by Katharine Baird

A book club where we will be reading The Battle by A.L.O.E.

Book description: Through circumstances beyond their control, the Roby family find themselves separated, left to fend for themselves through unforeseen trials. Will they skillfully wield the sword as they have been taught? Jostled in the rough thoroughfare of the world, Aleck is forced to obey promptly, act decidedly, and expose himself fearlessly and freely. What he needs most is a quick hand, a ready eye, and a gallant heart! Just as the thunderous waves threaten to swallow him up, he sees a life-boat in the midst of the storm! Sequel to The Giant Killer, this story unveils the obstacles we face each day, both from within and without, and challenges us in the midst of the battle to think of the victory–and consider the crown!
